PROFILE

Carl Weems, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Iowa State University, where he served as department chair from 2015 to 2025.

Dr. Weems received his education From Florida State University (bachelor’s in psychology), Florida International University (Ph.D. in lifespan developmental psychology), and Stanford University (postdoc). Previously, he was a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of New Orleans (UNO), where he served as the associate chair. He has held research/faculty appointments in the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine at LSU Health Sciences Center (clinical professor) and in the Life Course and Aging Center at LSU (adjunct faculty), Baton Rouge. He has been teaching for over 20 years at the university level and taught advanced graduate statistics for psychology Ph.D. students at UNO for 10 years. He is a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the American Psychological Association, and editor in chief of the Child & Youth Care Forum, a peer-reviewed international journal publishing scientific advances in child development and youth mental health. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, National Institute of Justice, Environmental Protection Agency, state agencies, private foundations, and industry. His scholarly works include over 170 peer-reviewed journal articles and a book, Neuroscience of Pediatric PTSD. His scholarship has been cited over 19,000 times (Google Scholar; h index of 78) by other researchers.
