Overview

This position (UC Title: Public Education Specialist 3) will serve as the GGSC’s Education Program Director. The Education Program Director will design, conduct, promote, and support various Greater Good Science Center educational programs in conjunction with partner organizations. More specifically, the program director will: translate and report on the science of social and emotional learning in Greater Good, the GGSC’s online magazine; represent the GGSC in the media and at events, such as professional workshops and public speaking engagements; develop educational materials that translate the science of well being into concrete educational tools and practices,-including science based lesson plans and curricula, independently and in conjunction with partner organizations.

Responsibilities

Writing: The Education Program Director reports on the science of well-being as it relates to education, distilling and translating best practices related to GGSC themes (social and emotional learning, empathy, compassion, gratitude, altruism, happiness, etc.) on the Greater Good website and in other GGSC publications.

Curricula and other teaching tools, design and delivery: Develops curricula, lesson plans, and other educational materials—independently and in conjunction with partner organizations—to translate scientific research on social and emotional learning into concrete educational tools, techniques, and programs. Plans and develops new programs and curricula, and adjusts existing courses and curricula as needed for different audiences. Participates in developing strategic market plans for target audiences. May present, instruct, or facilitate courses or programs. Evaluates prospective program partnerships to determine which individuals, groups, and organizations the GGSC should work with to produce educational materials that help teach SEL skills, including those available for download on the GGSC site. Collaborates with other school-based organizations to develop specific teaching tools for their audiences; identifies, develops and implements evaluation tools for courses, instructors, and programs. May serve as a work leader. May provide training or mentoring to instructors and other GGSC staff.

Speaking: Gives talks and leads workshops for educators in person and via the web. Represents GGSC in the media.

Planning and Administration: Actively participates in long-range strategic planning for GGSC educational programs. Develops, prepares and reconciles budget for program.

Required Qualifications

  • Must have extremely effective writing skills in order to translate scientific material for non-academics and make educational issues accessible to non-specialists.
  • Must have extremely strong speaking and interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills in order to lead workshops, speak about education issues related to GGSC themes, and to forge effective partnerships with like-minded organizations. Experience in other training environments preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of education landscape, including various programs, players, best practices, and trends in contemporary research and practice, particularly those related to social and emotional learning (SEL).
  • Thorough knowledge of and skill in delivering programs. Familiarity with scientific research and ability to understand scientific studies required.
  • Thorough knowledge of current public educational programs and trends.
  • Thorough skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new presentations/courses to meet organizational needs.
  • Thorough skills to develop and implement education program evaluations.
  • Thorough knowledge of education field and understanding of how work may impact other fields, as well as other initiatives within the GGSC.
  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of managing a portfolio of education courses at a variety of levels and in a broad variety of settings.
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree (at least) in related area and/or equivalent experience/training required.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).

This is a full-time (100%) position. It offers a very competitive salary and benefits package.
