[edit] Are you new to the world of wiki? We've put together some tips to help you get started.

[edit] 1) Create an account / Log in

Click the "Create an account" link at the top right of your screen; choose your login name and password; and log in. Once you're logged in, you can start making changes in the GoodWiki.

(If you're not logged in, our new spam-blocking protections will unfortunately prevent you from making edits. Just follow its prompts, log in--or create your log-in account if it's your first time--and you're set.)

[edit] 2) Pick a topic

Start from the Main Page. Decide which of the topics (e.g., "Altruism") and which of its sections (e.g., "Definitions and Overview") that you want to edit.

[edit] 3) Edit!

Once you're logged in and know where you want to edit or add text (or images), you're ready to go. Check out pages like Compassion & Empathy if you want to see examples of particularly informative topics pages before you get started.

  • Adding Text

Select "edit" at the top of the section you'd like to edit. Type in or change text as you like.

Use codes from our GoodWiki Coding Cheat Sheet to format your text with bullet points, font changes, block quotes, etc., as you need.

Click "Preview" at the bottom of the screen in order to see how your changes will appear.

If you're not satisfied, continue to make changes to your contribution in the editing box. You can "Preview" your results as many times as you like.

Once you're satisfied with how your contribution will appear, click "Save" at the bottom of the page. You're done!

  • Adding Images

Either select the framed landscape icon at the top of the editing field (6th from the left) or type in the following text and brackets: [[Image:Example.jpg]]. Replace "Example.jpg" with the filename and extension of the image you want to add (e.g., yourfile.jpg). If you don't want to have to tinker with changing the image size once you've uploaded it, make sure that it's the size you want in its original (pre-uploaded) file.

"Preview" and then "Save" the edits.

Your edit will show up as a new link on the page ("Image:yourfile.jpg"). Click on the link.

For the "Source Filename" box, browse for the file you want to upload. Once you've selected it, click "Upload File" at the bottom.

Once your file has loaded, return to the original page to check your work by clicking on the page under the "Link" header down below.

For more information about images--and tricks for formatting the image in more sophisticated ways--see MetaWiki's "Images and Other Uploaded Files" page.

  • Adding Abstracts

If you'd like to list an article cite and its abstract, please copy an image of the abstract and add it to the wiki as an image (see above). We ask that you not enter an abstract as plain text, as the abstract is a published excerpt and should not be edited (or edit-able).

  • Adding Website Links

To add a link to an external (non-wiki) website:

  • Unnamed link: [http://www.nupedia.com/]
  • Named link: [http://www.nupedia.com Nupedia]

To add an "internal" link that goes to another page of the GoodWiki:

  • Simply put the precise name of the other page in double brackets (e.g., [[Altruism]]).

[edit] 4) For more sophisticated editing tricks...

A) Check out the search-able resources at MetaWiki

or

B) If there is an example already in the GoodWiki of what you want your edit to resemble, copy its formatting.

  • Click on the "edit" tab of that section;
  • Copy (not cut!) the code that applies to it;
  • Select "Cancel" at the bottom of the edit page since you don't want to save any changes to this original code;
  • Paste the code into the other page or section you want to edit.
  • Modify the copied code so that it fits your needs and the new page you've pasted it to.

[edit] 5) If all else fails, contact us at GoodWikiEditor. We'll do our best to address your questions.

We would rather get your contribution--formatted or not, emailed or posted--than have you delay or forgo contributing because of wiki use difficulties.
