How Hectic Are Your Mornings?

February 2013 | TRT 10:35

Rona and I are frequently asked how parents and caregivers can make morning routines go more smoothly. It’s pretty common to have a lot of stress, and even yelling, as we try to herd our children out the door for school or daycare. Rona reviews her best tips for making mornings more calm and less trying for everyone.

So here’s a question, related to getting enough
sleep.  My son clearly needs a lot of sleep (he’s
always needed about 10 hours).  He started middle
school this year, and up until this year, he went to
bed at 8:15, lights out at 8:30, was sound asleep by
8:45 most nights, and got up easily (by himself, no
alarm) at 6:30.
This year, we’ve had the same bedtime and lights
out, but often he’s still awake at 9:30.  And I’m
shaking him awake at 7:15 (and he has trouble
waking up).  School’s at more or less the same
time, so we leave the house at about the same
time—but mornings are much harder and I don’t
know how to help him get to sleep.

“Don’t be yelling at them from another room.”  I like
that a lot… still don’t get how frazzled we get as
parents so early in the morning sometimes… even
when we durned well know better.

I guess its just a good thing to at least KNOW it. The
hectic lives most of us live doesn’t allow us to
practice what we aspire to 100% of the time. The
science attests to that also. What we profess or even
believe we are going to do… and what we actually DO
in any given situation, are not one and the same.
